The 25,453 hectares large Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park, founded in 1980, comprises the localities Badia in Alta Badia, Braies, Dobbiaco, Valdaora (all of them in the Val Pusteria valley), La Val and San Vigilio di Marebbe (both in the Val Badia valley). Located in the heart of Dolomites, this legendary nature park is an eldorado for hikers, mountaineers and mountain bikers alike.
The nature park is characterised by green alpine meadows, rugged peaks, crystal-clear mountain lakes and unique alpine flora and fauna. As the name suggests, it lies amidst the majestic peaks of the Braies Dolomites and the Fanes and Sennes Plateaus.
Golden eagles, ibexes, marmots and chamois as well as amphibians and reptiles live here. Moreover the area above 2,000 m a.s.l. is the habitat of mountain hares and snow grouses - on this altitude also the edelweiss, the dragon mouth and the Dolomite yarrow thrive.
A precious jewel in the nature park is Lake Braies in the Braies Dolomites, which can be surrounded by foot or discovered on a rowing boat. In winter, however, the landscape is of scenic beauty and can be enjoyed best while doing a snowshoe hike, a sleigh ride or a ski tour.
