Traditional sleigh races and other winter events provide unforgettable experiences in the Alta Badia.
Even if horses are not any longer used as workhorses as they used to, they still have an important role to play in everyday life as well as in tradional events. Particularly popular in the Alta Badia are Haflinger and Noriker horses.
It’s been some decades now that horse racing competitions are organised on a regular basis in the valley. These competitions show that a sleigh ride does not necessarily have to be a cosy and calm event. However, one of the most important races takes place every year on Carnival Sunday between the villages of Pedraces and La Villa. This horse-drawn sleigh race with a long-standing tradition is called “Slittada da paur” which literally means “peasant sleigh parade”.
Other events you don’t have to miss are the skijorning races, taking place on an irregular basis. This Scandinavian discipline involves the participants on skis to be drawn by horses. Fascinating!
