Badia is located in Alta Badia and includes the villages San Leonardo and Pedraces. It is characterised by its scenic location in the Dolomites and at the border of the nature parks Puez-Odle and Fanes-Senes-Braies, as well as by its rural nature. Above all in the hamlets the typical architectural style of the Ladin speaking area has been preserved. In fact, customs and tradition are of utmost importance to the village, which is also shown in various events taking place in the course of the year, such as the Noza da Paur and the S. Leonardo horse ride.
Pedraces is located at 1.315 m asl, a particular attraction this village offers is lake Sompunt at 1,460 m asl, situated above the village. The best way to visit this lake is a hike or a bike tour. From this lake, offering wonderfully refreshing waters, you can enjoy a fabulous view on the Sasso della Croce mountain range. In winter this lake is, however, ruled by ice skaters. Another attraction, particularly recommendable to families, is the deer park Paraciora Sompunt. Kids are going to feel at ease at the playground of the Paraciora mountain hut. In winter the Alta Badia ski resort and the Sellaronda are within easy reach.
San Leonardo offers one of the most striking churches of South Tyrol, the S. Leonardo church. Another religious site that is highly recommendable is the Santa Croce sanctuary located in unique position at the foot of the Santa Croce (Sas dla Crusc) mountain range. You can reach this rather popular pilgrimage site, photo subject and excursion destination either on foot or via chairlift.
Not only the Santa Croce sanctuary can be reached on foot, but also Sotciastel, where at the end of the 80s human traces dating back to the Mesolithic or Bronze Age have been found. The items that were unearthed right here are today exhibited in the Ladin Museum Ciastel de Tor. However, the village is also birthplace of the Saint Joseph Freinademetz as well as of the sculptor Lois Anvidalfarëi and the painter Lois Irsara.
> Our tip: A trip to the Santa Croce sanctuary in summer and a ski tour round the impressive Gruppo del Sella alpenstock in winter - in fact the Sellaronda is one of the most famous ski circuits worldwide.
