The Piz Boé summit is part of the Sella group, it is 3.152 metres high and it is known to be one the easiest summits which are higher than 3000 metres. In a sunny august day we take the ropeway Boè in Corvara, which takes us at a height of 2.200 m and then, with the chair lift Vallon, we reach our starting point, 2.500 m asl. We follow the path 638, walking at the foot of the Sella group faces. We pass near the Refuge Kostner, now we are constantly and smoothly climbing up around the rocks. We come to a steep scree slope, where we are forced to hang on to the stones to avoid slipping. The path has been defined as a hard trail by the Alpine Club due to this slippery and steep stretch.
With a focused effort we manage to cross it and after that the ground conditions are really better. We keep climbing up and we can enjoy the view on the Dolomites: Badia, Alleghe, Fassa, and the Siusi Alp with Fanes, the Marmolada and its Punta di Penia, until the Catinaccio and Sassolungo, and these are only a part of the mountains we can see from here. After 2,5 hours walking we reach the summit, where we find some excursionists, who are enjoying the view in these few available metres between the cross and the little hut Fassa. From here we trace our steps back to our starting point. The Piz Boè is the border between the provinces Bolzano, Trento and Belluno. Besides the path no. 638 you can follow many other trails from the Piz Boè, as the no. 672, the Via ferrata (climbing iron route) to Vallon, or some easier paths, which are partly equipped, toward the Sass Pordoi. Here a ropeway will take you directly to the Pass Pordoi.
Please note: when you plan to do this hike, please inform yourself about the condition of the trail!
