This horse ride is an event held in honour of Saint Leonhard
Saint Leonhard is one of the most famous Saints in Europe. More than 600 churches and chapels are dedicated to this Saint. Leonhard was born around 500 in Gaul, France. Actually he should join the army, but he decided to follow the Bishop of Reims and to dedicate his life to war prisoners.
The statue of Saint Leonhard is usually personated with a crosier, a book and a collar. Saint Leonhard is the patron saint of horses and horse riders.
Every year in November in Alta Badia, there is a horse parade in honour of Saint Leonhard. Participants in traditional costumes from all Ladin valleys come to Alta Badia. Protagonists of this event are, however, the decorated Haflinger and Noriker horses, which parade across the centre of San Leonardo. Of course there are also fringe events as well as traditional Ladin delicacies.
