Hike across the Passo Limo to the Fanes Alp

This day hike leads us to one of the most beautiful places of the Dolomites, the mythical Kingdom of Fanes.

The parking space nearby Sarè (1,660 m a.s.l., between San Cassiano and the Passo di Valparola mountain bus, with bus stop) is our starting point for this mountain hike. We start quite easy and walk at the southern bank of the creek until the Capanna Alpina mountain hut. There we follow the marker no. 11, the path gets steeper and steeper now. Through rocks and steps we climb a total of 300 m until we reach the valley between the rock face of Mt. Conturines and the peak of Mt. Lagazuoi.

The path leads us through light piles of stones, in between yellow alpine poppy across the Ju del Ega area to the Malga Gran Fanes mountain hut. After a short rest we carry on to Passo Limo at 2,174 m a.s.l. The quality of the path now is much better, so this rise we do without any troubles. Now we reach our highest point for today, the pass at Lake Limo. Here our descent starts.

We keep left and follow the marker to Rif. Lavarella mountain hut. A very special landscape waits for us now. The Lé Vert (2,045 m a.s.l.), a small wetland, the alpine hut with a chapel and wooden refuges. At the western hillside of the valley there's the "Parliament of the Marmots": layers of Dolomite rocks which form a gigantic natural amphitheatre. Later on we walk further to the Rif. Fanes mountain hut and take the wide path back to the Passo Limo pass and down to Sarè.
