St. Barbara Chapel

The little S. Berbura Church (in Ladin) rises in beautiful panoramic position on a hill above La Val

The chapel in La Val has not only been dedicated to St. Barbara, but also to St. Florian. It was mentioned for the first time in written documents in 1491 when it was consecrated. Precious from a historical and artistic point of view are the frescoes inside the church as well as the painting at the exterior wall, depicting the crucifixion with Maria and John of the Cross in the open landscape.

Barbara is the patron saint of miners - it is presumed that miners of the Valparola valley which smelted the mined ore of the Monte Pore mountain, built this church. However, it is also believed that in the nearby hamlet of Tolpei there were miners who won silver.

A beautiful hike leads in about 30 minutes from the parish church in the village centre of La Val to the chapel past some beautiful old farmsteads of the valley. The 1 km long walk proceeds also through the Bosch da Crosta, a larch forest, and follows the “Memento Vivere” path. This contemplation trail was created in 2006 and comprises five stations dedicated to the single phases in life (birth, childhood, youth, adult age and old age).
